PDA (Personal
Digital
Assistant)
The PDA has become an useful tool
for daily work and leisure. For the family doctor, it can be
much more than a versatile and practical agenda: it may also be a
source of scientific knowledge always updated and
available in any place (from doctor's office to patient's
domicile or even at a scientific congress...), an easy way to
perform evidence based medicine, a patient files manager, a
medical calculator and a good backup of important documents.
Have you ever thought to be able to take with you, anywhere you
go, textbooks like the classical
Harrison's, the Currents, the Clinical Evidence, the 5
Minutes Clinical Consult and complete drug guides, all at the
same time?
In the field of leisure, the PDA
can serve as a MP3 player, as an easy access to general news,
weather, as a console of games, as a GPS navigator, among other
functions.
There are two main types of PDAs:
Palm and Pocket PC. The functionalities are similar
and both are synchronizable with the PC.
In this webpage, you'll find some
software with some of the above described functions. This
selection is biased by the author's own experience and taste…

Merck Medicus
Much more than a simple PDA
version of the traditional "The Merck Manual". It presents
multiple functionalities: eWatch, Harrison's Practice,
MEDLINE Journals, MerckMedicus News, Pocket Guide to
Diagnostic Tests, Medical Reuters News, RSS News Feeds, Search
and The Manual Merck, Professional Edition. From these, I
point out the Merck Manual that has a structure of easy use
and allows you to quickly find the answers you need. I
also point out the Pocket Guide to Diagnostic Tests
- very useful!
